It would be cool if you could see which members are on. This could be useful in many ways - e.g. it's late at night you want to figure out something quickly on that same day otherwise you will end up asking the teacher tomorrow and would rather not annoy the user community (although sometimes people have similar questions and reporting back could be useful). That's just one example, but i think it would be a nice feature.

There should be more example and/or practice questions to prepare students for their mid year and end of year exams.

Every day, a "ballbreaker" of a question (in any subject) should be asked, to keep the community wanting to come back daily to challenge themselves!

A weekly VCE podcast where tutors talk about their area of specialty and give tips to current VCE students

At the moment there is no real community at merspi, because beyond asking and answering questions, too few people have enough reputation to vote. Since people can't vote, no one earns any rep. The cycle needs to broken.

Allow students to bookmark questions and 'mark them as favourite', allowing them to easily return at a later date.
